Under The Bridge
‘Under The Bridge’ is a sound and light installation – a collaboration between Jack Wimperis and Miniature Museum.
Commissioned by Cotswold Canals Connected through Creative Sustainability for the Slow Canal Trail, summer 2021.
Situated under Haywards Bridge on the Stroudwater Navigation (near Stonehouse/Ryeford under Ebley bypass)
Visitors passing under the bridge – by towpath, kayak or boat – trigger a different soundscape depending on which end they come from. LED lighting running the 30 metre stretch of the bridge on the waterside reacts to the sound piece in rhythm and colour – and voices.
The sound features a beautiful Gregorian chant – Beata Viscera (monophonic conductus) sacred music from Notre-Dame Cathedral. Composed by Pérotin. The Choir is – Tonus Peregrinus, Conducted by Anthony Pitts, and is Licensed courtesy of Naxos Music UK Ltd.
Due to popular demand, the installation continued through 2021 beyond the May early summer season Slow Canal Trail.
The installation is powered by solar energy, so its performance is subject to light and seasonal conditions.
Many thanks to Colin of Boatmobility for his friendly and supple support and lending the Kingfisher Katanu and electric boat for our installation purposes!
